MD1 recap: Africa bent the script, timibadass read the room

Cabo Verde blanked Spain, Morocco held Brazil, Egypt frustrated Belgium, Congo DR stopped Portugal, and timibadass turned 24 fixtures into a 74-point MD1 win.

    Goborr·18 June 2026·MD1

If you watched MD1 from a viewing centre, a WhatsApp group, or the corner of your office with one eye on live scores, you know exactly what happened. The opening round did not move in a straight line. It swerved. Spain could not break Cabo Verde. Morocco stood up to Brazil. Egypt refused to leave Belgium alone. Congo DR took a point from Portugal. On Goborr, 100 predictors called 24 fixtures, and the leaderboard exposed anyone who trusted reputation more than the game in front of them.

    The MD1 angle

    • African teams created four of the hardest calls on the Goborr board: Spain 0-0 Cabo Verde, Brazil 1-1 Morocco, Belgium 1-1 Egypt, and Portugal 1-1 Congo DR.
    • The expanded 48-team format means those points matter now. The top two in each group advance, joined by the eight best third-place teams.
    • timibadass won MD1 because he did not just survive the chaos. He found points inside it.

Spain 0-0 Cabo Verde fooled every single Goborr predictor. Not one draw in seventy-eight picks. That is MD1 in one sentence.

The night the favourites stopped looking safe

The co-hosts did their part. Mexico beat South Africa 2-0 in the opener, the USA hit Paraguay for four, and Canada took a point from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Germany, Argentina, France, England, Sweden and Norway all made loud starts too. But MD1 will be remembered for the games that refused to obey the poster. Brazil 1-1 Morocco caught 90% of Goborr predictors out. Portugal 1-1 Congo DR caught 96% out. Belgium 1-1 Egypt caught 95% out. Spain 0-0 Cabo Verde caught everybody.

    African football owned the tension

For Nigerian fans, this was the thread running through the round. Cabo Verde made the result of the week by holding Spain scoreless. Morocco looked nothing like a surprise package anymore, matching Brazil with the confidence of a team that expects to belong here. Egypt took Belgium deep into a fight in Seattle. Congo DR got a first World Cup point from Portugal. Ghana beat Panama 1-0 and sits second in Group L behind England. Côte d'Ivoire opened with a clean 1-0 win over Ecuador.

It was not all sweet. Senegal lost 3-1 to France, Tunisia were hit 5-1 by Sweden, Algeria fell 3-0 to Argentina, and South Africa lost the curtain-raiser to Mexico. That mix is what makes the round work as a story. African teams did not all win, but they shaped the table, shaped the conversation, and shaped the Goborr leaderboard.

    Who topped the round

That is where the football story and the Goborr story meet. timibadass finished MD1 on 74 points, three clear of showtisz and four clear of kodak1800. He did not need every shock. He needed enough brave reads in the right places, plus the consistency to collect points when the obvious results actually landed.
